Zander - Mining Minerals: Evidence dating to 43 000 years ago mining in Africa in the 'lion cave'. After that there is also much evidence of mining of turquoise and copper and of course gold.
Dylan- The ancient Africans shaved with Volcanic glass (like obsidian)
Liam- Art: Glyphs and cave art dating back over 40 000 years. Tiny drilled snail shells were found dating 75 000 years old.
Leif- Fire: The Ancient Africans discovered fire over 1.4 million years ago.
Taro - The bow and arrow, used for hunting.
Ayden and Ben shared their findings on Azande Politics and Religion:
Ben: Art and Society. The Azande used wood, bark and clay for a lot of their art. Ben shared some pictures he found of pottery, carvings, masks and throwing knives. The throwing knives were made of copper and steel, they were patterned and because of their high value would be used as bride wealth (to buy a bride).
Ayden: Religion and Politics. The Zande people practiced an animistic/shamanistic religion. One of their main characters in their myths is of Ture (a mischievous spider). The Zande practiced Witchcraft and believed that some people were born witches (born with Mangu inside of them, in their bellies). Their governance system was that of a feudal systems with chieftains, higher ranking warriors and lower level peasants.
Aleah, Sierra and Sina share their findings on Azande weapons and warriors.
Aleah shared the Azande weapons. She presented a power point presentation with lots of pictures of the varying weapons and discussed the reasonings for such unique shapings.
Sierra shared about the Azande shields, known b them as kub. They were made of wicker. The Azande wore no armour, they just had their loin cloth, sandals, headdress and shield.
Sina lead us all in the making of Azande headdress.
South Sudan National Anthem
The Azande people live in modern day South Sudan. Upon investigation the class learned that South Sudan just recently became an independent nation (2011). We listened to their anthem and discussed.
Oh God, Oh God, Oh God, Oh God, Oh God!
We praise and glorify you
For your grace upon Cush,
The land of great warriors
And origin of world's civilization.
Oh Cush! Oh Cush!
Arise, shine, raise your flag with the guiding star
And sing songs of freedom with joy,
For peace, liberty and justice
Shall forever more reign.
So Lord bless South Sudan!
So Lord bless South Sudan!
Oh black warriors! Oh black Oh black warriors!
Let's stand up in silence and respect,
Saluting millions of martyrs whose
Blood cemented our national foundation.
We vow We vow to protect our nation.
Oh Eden! Oh Eden!
Land of milk and honey and hardworking people,
Uphold us united in peace and harmony.
The Nile, valleys, forests and mountains
Shall be our sources of joy and pride.
So Lord bless South Sudan!
So Lord bless South Sudan!
So Lord bless South Sudan!
So Lord bless South Sudan!

We discussed Witchcraft more fully. We talked about why even still today they strongly believe in Witchcraft and talked also about their definition of witchcraft and the possibilities of this being the truth.
After watching the following video we discussed the Azande peoples view of HIV and there wanting to know (which is very different then many other parts of Africa). On a side note somehow we ended up discussing the difference between castration and neuturing.
We also discussed the way they loved in their villages, their huts being farther apart because of their fear of witchcraft, how they would ask the oracles for help etc.
