Half of class shared the country they have been researching (about 5-10 presentation each)
Liam - Mali: Peeked in the 14th century, main trade centre, Tombouktou/Timbuktu,
Dylan - Congo:Belgian colony gained independence in 1960. 2nd Largest country in Africa, 11th in world. Centre of the African World War (and explained the African World War)
Leif - Swaziland: Monarchy, grows sugarcane, tobacco, rice and peanuts. Oldest mine in Africa called the Lion Cave, main religions Protestant, Zionism and Catholicism are main religions, civilization dates back 200,000 to the stone age.
Zander - Botswana: First religion found here, it worshiped the python, shared about the civilization dating back to 17, 000 BCE to 1650 AD before colonization. Talked about these Khoesan speaking hunters and gathers and the early chiefdoms in 850 AD and the later wars with South Africa from 1750 onwards.
Aleah and Sina share Merina Geography and History
Sina shared a map of the Merina, and some geography of the area. She shared a lot of information on Madagascar and compared the size of Madagascar to other islands of the world (including Vancouver Island!) Her and Aleah talked about the other tribal areas of Madagascar. Aleah shared the history of the Merina people and the monarchy/feudal system that they had. She shared about the reigning kings and queens and what they brought to the Merina people.
Ayden and Ben share Agriculture, Food and Daily Living of the Merina
Ben shared about the Daily Living of the Merina and the houses they lived in. They were very particular about size and direction of house. Everything was lined in the right way which he explained to us. Everyone lived in houses of the same size and looking the same. Ayden shared about the Merina agriculture, the foods they grew along with the climates. He also shared about Merina art. Many wood carvings (likely because of the dense forests surrounding). He showed us a few pieces and explained their significance.
Discuss the origin of the Merina people (roots are from Indonesia NOT Africa surprisingly). We looked at a map and discussed the route they must have taken. We also looked at the surrounding tribal areas and how the Merina gained some of their mighty power in the area.
